Perhaps it depended on what market the body was being built for ?

Hi Nigel,
Have a look at ''Requirement for Seat Belts in English Mokes'' below, Bodge gives a good account of belts and dates and things!

janz wrote:Are there reinforcement plates in the rear inner wings near the rear shock mounts? These were introduced in beginning of 1965 I believe. In the Body Parts Manual, they are parts 48, 49 and 50 (that is the rear wing reinforcement plate).
Here is a picture showing in the rear fender, the only thing it had was the reinforcement across the bend in the rear wing, no seat belt mounts whatsoever.

Edit, as a note, this is my body number (what's left of the original body.. >.<)

Indeed, reading back in your post is seems yours had just been built when mine was getting on the boat to Philidelphia :) Funnily enough going by US holidays mine was built on Veterans Day 1965 (nov 11) and dispatched to Phili on Thanksgiving day 1965 (nov 25) lol

hi Chris,
Our Mokes must be close relatives then! Mine was built 22th November 1965 and despatched to Philly on 27th January 1966.
I have details of some owners in San Diego and bills from Britannia Motors Inc. 2210 First Ave. San Diego but nothing between 1966 and 1979. I have an application for original registration from March 1987 on which it says the vehicle was purchased for $50!!!

Chris,
I see you have the "mystery hole" just ahead of the shock mounting discussed here:
http://mokeclub.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3969
Concensus of opinion was that it was used as a shoulder harness mount. Now, I'm not so sure.
Amazed at the rapid progress on "Rusty" your Moke. You're like letting loose a mad dog in a meat market.

Oh I know what those holes were for on mine, in fact they were still in use when I got the car. Someone drilled large holes and used large fender washers to mount rear seat belts... granted they put them in the middle of large flat panels so there was no strength... You can see the front seat belts mounts right under the front seats.

On that view, the hole is lower than mine... I think I was confusicated by the upside down view....
By the hole & captive nut being missing on yours, I suppose that shoots down any theory of it being there for tooling purposes.

It's odd they would go through the trouble of designing the belt mounts and then not installing it in some shells. Seeing as when the saloon shells got seatbelt mounts, they all got seatbelt mounts whether they were used or not. Perhaps the A/B/0 numbers were spotted to shells when they were already built and as the regulation was for belts in the UK at the time they had a back stock of illegal seatbeltless shells they saved for export market orders?

Interesting

I think all A/B shells were built with seatbelt mount reinforcement plates welded in... it's only AMB shells (pre - BMC buyout of pressed Steel) that seem to have no mounting points in the back

Janz... Look up at the rusty pics... A/B shell with no seat belt mounts. It is a November 11th 1965 build for export to Philidelphia or so the heritage cert says.

It seems strange.. seeing as the seat belt requirements came in earlier then this was built there, perhaps there was a back stock of unusable shells? They got an order from a market where they were legal and then they used those? Perhaps a list of A/B numbers and if they had the mounts or not would show a pattern?
