Spare wheel mounting (how to ????)

Post by emanuelcavaco9 »

Hi guys,
I just bought a spare wheel bracket for a Portuguese Moke 1988, but can't manage to mount the wheel.
Either is too lose or I am doing something wrong, does anyone have the details how to, or a picture to help me?

Thanks in advance

Hi Emanuel,
Seems like you may need a few more parts!
http://www.m-parts.co.uk/index.php?rout ... uct_id=146
Looking at the back panel on a Portuguese Moke I think you may need to bolt the square wheel carrier plate to the back panel using the four bolts, then mount the spare wheel to the carrier using the plate and bolt that you already have. I don't think you need item 7 as this is for English Mokes.
Hope that helps.

I thought the Portugese models have a big metal mounting bracket, like the later Australian ones

I think that is the big square carrier plate?
If Emanuel has the plate and fitting the bracket and bolt he has bought and the wheel feels loose, it may be he has the wheel the wrong way round?

Emanual - if you do fit that 'carrier', can I suggest you also put one of them bicycle security cables through it as well? Our 68 - 78 Mokes had something similar and they are well reknown for breaking and in the process, loosing the spare wheel. Usually you don't know until after you've stopped.

IMO these are the best 'standard' ones

but I'm not sure who might have them at present.

I think the early ones did - not a model that I'm too familiar with.
Old Mokers never die, they just smell that way.

Sorry Spider,

wrong one for 1988 Portuguese Mokes, yours is Australian or early Portuguese!
It really is the big square one, like the photo on the site from M-parts.

Kind regards to all, Rien.

That's just what I was thinking of building. Do you have any plans for that, or could you post a sort of sketch with rough dimensions?

Thanks!

I've got a good quality repro Aussie one that I bought for my Moke, but discovered that it won't work with the early californian bumper. The later bumpers were extended further front the body. I think it would be OK with a 10" wheel or with a straight bumper.

If anyone is interested, its not doing much in my shed.
