Hood pattern

Post by Doug G »

I am reluctant to hand over my Australian Mini Moke hood, albeit in a relatively poor condition, to a chap with a sewing machine (best description I can offer of the choice available here  ) to unpick and use as a pattern to make a replacement.

Does anyone have a pattern available? 8)

I feel you are wise not to hand over your existing hood, especially if it's orignal, but not for that reaon only that it would now be at least 25 years old and withour doubt, shrunk. It's also probably really crsip too.

All the Motor Trimmers that I've ever spoken too prefer to make them to fit the Moke, rather than make them to a pattern, then spend a lot of time tring their best to get them to fit. I know from experience that no two Moke Bodies are quite the same.

What I've also aways noticed is that if the hood isn't a good fit to start with, then the life is somewhat shorter than would other reasonably expect. Granted, I do know roughly where you are, and I'm not sure what facilities and services you have at your disposal.

If you are only looking for a fairly inexpensive quick option, Mokes Australia have hoods off the shelf which for the price and what they are, are 'OK'.

I agree with what Spider says. The other point is that it shouldn't be necessary to unpick the existing hood as a pattern, it ought to be possible to trace it without pulling it apart.

My hood is getting very old and tired now. I had it made almost 20 years ago. It wasn't a great hood then, and it was actually made to fit my previous moke. I've been spending the last few evenings with a needle and thread re-stitching many of the seams. There is only one local place that I'd trust to make a new hood, but the real experts are on the mainland. I may have to spend the cash and take the car across for a week or so to get a really good one made.

Why not keep your existing hood and look to order one from 'Runamoke' I brought one from them 7 years ago now and it is still as good as the day that I fitted it. Well worth the money and a perfect fit.

That way you know that it will be correct for the car too.

English hoods and seat covers in both green and black are available from M Parts http://www.m-parts.co.uk/Services/Hoods-Trim/

Unfortunately they are not available yet through the online shop but you can always use the enquiry form. Roger
Maybe try Roger too - Options abound!

Will have to contact them and gat a price.

I then need to add transatlantic shipping.

Then add the cost + the shipping + insurance and multiply that total by 1.592 (Dutie, taxes etc) and see what it will finally cost me. :o

I don't even want to think about the issues if I had to return it.
