Ignition

Post by Doug G »

Has anyone changed from a distributor and point system over to Electronic ignition?

If so how much did it cost and what was involved (How hard was it to do?).

This could make a good article in 'Moking'.

Hi Doug,
Yes, converted my English Moke to electronic ignition a couple of years ago. I bought a complete kit including a full distributor, ignition leads, coil and a set of spark plugs for about £85. It was pretty easy to fit, just had to get the timimg set up at the garage after fitting. I wanted a full distributor so I could still carry the old one if I had any problems.

This is similar to the kit I bought from Accuspark on e-bay.

I've covered about 5000 miles with it and had no problems (touch wood!).

Cheers

Hi Doug. I got mine from the other supplier. Aldon Automotive, been using them since the 70's. They built me a distributor for an Aussie 1275, with electronic ignition, unit has bee fine, and done over 9000 miles.

PS:- I could send you one as a Birthday present!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't matter if it is a gift or not. I will still have to pay +/-59% import duty etc when it arrives here.

I’d say really you’d want the same as what you havre now. I’d suspect it will be a 25D4 with vacuum advance. The number is stamped on the distributor body but it’s very small and hard to spot if you don’t know where and what to look for, the other way to tell is to look at the of the cap, the different models have different shaped caps. Compare yours to those shown on the minisport web page

Oh well got a 59D4 Lucas Type Distributor with Electronic Ignition sent.

What problems should I expect from using a 59D4 instead of a 25D4 ?

Can a 59D4 be used to easily replace the 25D4 ?

Will probably have to upgrade coil, suggestions?
