Battery going flat

Post by Doug G »

The Mini Moke's battery goes flat overnight.

The local 'electrican' says he can't find the problem. :o

Anyone had this 'going flat/dead' problem, and if so what is the solution?

Helpful suggestions welcomed.

Hi Doug. last time I had that fault, it was the Alternator faulty. Replaced the diode pack, problem solved

I think he (electrician*)said that the alternator was OK but will check that again.

Thanks.

* Unfortunately there are no qualified electricians and none qualified in 12v circuitry on this rock. LOL

Hi Doug. One way to check if it is the Alternator, is to charge the battery up. Remove the plug from the Alternator. Leave it, and check the battery after 24 hours, if the battery holds it's charge, then it probably is the Alternator. Battery loses charge then do further checks on the battery.

Hi Doug,
Had a similar problem, even after charging overnight the battery soon faded on starting. Had the battery checked and found one cell had had it, so new battery cured the problem.

Moke is a circa 1973 Aussie model.

So if it is the diode what item/model/ref number do I get to replace it?

You'll have to work out which variant of the alternators you have. Does it have an external regulator, which looks sort of like this, up on the firewall on the RHS of the engine bay?

Also, what does the back of the alternator look like? Does it have a black plastic cover that covers the whole of the back, a black plastic cover that covers half of the back or no cover at all?

Solved. It was a 'carp' battery. Replaced it and all is well . . . . . . for now.
