Newbie from Malta - 1967 Moke resto
Hi All
I just bought a Moke in parts, as a resto project.
There's a number on the LHS of the engine bay, AMB000533N. Is this the chassis no?
I think it's likely to be a UK-based car as there was a manufacturing plant here in the Sixties for KDC of UK & Italian cars.
Looking forward to get started on the project!
Cheers
Steve

Re: Newbie from Malta - help identify Moke
Hi Steve and welcome.
That number is the body number I believe.
Search "Body Number", there have been several topics made here about it.

Re: Newbie from Malta - help identify Moke
Thanks Dean
I've searched and read through the threads. what a great & friendly forum, fantastic!
I'm trying to identify the build date so that I can get the correct panles & parts for it.
So far it seems its one of the early batch of MK1 before production shifted elsewhere.
I should get the chassis no. today hopefully that will help further.
Was the running gear lifted directly off the mini of the time? I need parts like brake & clutch cylinders (in fact the entire hydraulic system), clutch...
Will start a website soon with the project progress and update on here regularly.
Cheers

Hi Steve and welcome. Yes, running gear and a lot of other bits are all Mini stuff. As to panels, I think you'll have to use what you can get although they didn't change much from the first Mokes to the last

Thanks, that's one hassle sorted as old Minis are very popular here.
Chassis number is 961976 as per logbook, does this make sense?
Thanks
Steve

Wow, that thing is a little rough... although I am one to be talking.
What kind of rear tires did it have? The rear end looks to be tubbed in a classic hot rod fashion, which is somewhat odd being front wheel drive.

Re: Newbie from Malta - help identify Moke
Hmm, with a body number of Amb0000533n I would expect a chassis number starting with A or M / AB1 657xxx or 677xxx.
Interesting metal work in the back. Not seen that before. Floor is raised too. Definitely mk1 due to lower bonnet mounts on bulkhead. Back panel looks non standard - no flutes and home made kickouts
Looks quite solid. Very tidy cutting out of floor. Ready for nice restoration

@ clm - how very dare you?! she's getting the makeover she's crying out for, just watch this space.
Thanks for the feedback. I wondered about the rear floor tub. The odd part is from the inside you can make out the strengthening for the spare wheel on the rear (yellow circle) in pic below. Surely no one would bother doing this on a replacement home-made panel? At least if I were doing it I would simply use a flat panel reinforced with box section. Also in this pic I need to remove the bits outlined red but I believe the green to be standard.
http://minimokeresto.webs.com/apps/phot ... =180103196
So would I be correct in thinking it should look like this pic below? So the floor is still raised at the rear, but without the rise to the rear.
http://minimokeresto.webs.com/apps/phot ... =180103197
I want to remove all the extras and get it more stock looking but hadn't planned rear panels into the resto. This needs to be a cheap quickie (which means expensive and lengthy in my project terms).
Thanks
Steve

Re: Newbie from Malta - help identify Moke
Lol sorry, people said the same about my toy, but it is on the road now. So I know yours is save able with enough elbow grease! What are your plans for it's rebuild planned color and mods?
As for the rear panels, They are not really that horrible on the pocketbook. You however might look into Roy Scotts book, it has quite a bit of plans for constructing the panels you might need for your reconstruction. I have a copy of the book, it's brilliant although a bit small, the plans really would be nice about twice the size they are

Re: Newbie from Malta - help identify Moke
hehe thanks you've certainly had a project. very well done on the owrk you've done, amazing restoration. I quite like the battle-scarred look yours has now, a new spray job will lose that faded glory
Back to mine. Colour i have no idea yet. To maintain classic status in Malta it must be in a colour as offered in that era. So I can't go and use any modern finish. I like blue possibly metallic if i can get away with it.
Mods : it looks like i'm going to spend to get it back to standard! I'm quite sure i'll change the fibreglass seats for something a bit more comfy. Might close off the rear behind the seats to stow a couple of things securely. Probably minilites (in white if the car is blue).
And the engine seems to be a 1100 cc, if it starts I'll keep it
Cheers

Aha!
Yes that is the stock rear panel, I can see the ribs from the inside. It looks to either be plated over or have the flutes filled in from the outside with body filler.

Hi. in your picture file you made a comment about the Gold Seal engine. These where used by the factory for warrenty replacement, and sold to the public as well. 1100 should work well in a Moke.

That pic of yours (number11) does indeed show a standard rear floor, just as it should be. Apart from the two plates at the back
