65 English little wheeler in Coastal North Carolina

Post by pbraun »

I bought this 65 Moke about a year and a half ago, but have just recently started serious restoration work. I did get the subframes sandblasted and powder coated black, and the speedo rebuilt, but other things were beyond my ability, so I looked around to find a reasonable body shop who would be able to do this project and interested. Found one through some local car guys and now the shell has been sandblasted to reveal much swiss cheese and bad body work. Panels have been acquired thanks to Leo Jack and the shell is getting reassembled. Brakes are getting some attention, etc...

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then here are a whole bunch (188 as of today) of pictures about this fun endeavor : http://www.flickr.com/photos/pbraun/set ... 938170988/

Hi Peter,
Great work so far! Keep it up.
Your engine number is a little before mine 8AC U H3135, my Chassis number is AAB1L817813, my moke was built in November 1965 and exported to Philadelphia in January 1966, returning to this side of the pond in 2006.
Cheers

Hi, Chris,
Thanks! getting there little by little. Mine is chassis # A-AB1-4771098.....built 2 Aug 65 and sent to Philadelphia 6 Aug 65.

Wondering today about seat belt mounting plates, because mine had none at all, front or rear. What did yours have from November 65?

Also, do you know how your motor/tranny was painted? all green, or just a green block?

Also wondering what color to paint the brake pedal box. Black or body color?

Hi Peter,
Yours was a little before mine then, mine went to Philly in Jan 66.
Not sure what seat belt moutings mine had when it left the factory, but it just has lap belts in the front and nothing in the back. There has been quite alot of posts on here re seat belt introduction and wether its ok to just have lap belts, however, to fit three point belts the shoulder strap needs to fix right back near the shock absorber mounting, not godd for anyone in the back and with original low backed seats, not good for those in the front seats.
My motor and gearbox are both painted in the engine green and the pedal box and pedals are both black, but again I dont know what they would have been in '66. The moke was finished in Spruce green at the factory so who knows.
Cheers

Looking good Peter. How are you finding the fit of the replacement panels?

I have found the fit of the panels to be excellent! Careful alignment is critical, but just a little fitment work required. All panels were from Leo Jack at mokepanels.com. Some were made ourselves.

That's good to hear - I'm going to have to do new floors in a couple of years. I have heard nothing but good things about Leo's panels.

Nice job there for sure, but, in detail, it won't look like a Moke, it's too well aligned!

Yeah, keep up the nice work :)

No worries =- I'll bungle it up somehow! ;) Thanks!

Now, Jan 11, everything is getting a final sand blast, lightly, just to clean up the 6 months of surface rust built up whilst doing other welding and fitting. Then primer, seam sealer and paint.

In spite of some ugly weather, the Moke is now in primer ! yeah!

Primer being worked on, smoothed out, metal working visible areas before seam sealing
