I went for the cheaper option.... New clamp for the manifold to downpipe & issue sorted! Running much smoother & significantly quieter.

Ahead of braving my first IMMM I decided to have the car checked over at a local classic specialist who did some body work on my Pick-Up.

Required work was a wheel bearing, new rear brake shoes and a split CV gaiter. It would seem after 3 1/2 years I've also managed to cooling system flushed out totally, with the coolant now a clear blue in the radiator.

There was one downside to the work, while waiting outside for an Austin 1300 to have its work finished a caravan decided to have an argument with my rear bumper.....

The caravan suffered worse however

Bumper is back and repainted at my mums, haven't seen it yet but will be refitting it over the weekend and packing up ready to leave on Wednesday.

That’s about when we’re leaving too...our advance party picked up a tent that I found in my garage and have it packed in their camper van ready for sailing on Monday morning

Following a successful and reliable (bar a couple of electrical gremlins!) IMMM it was some time to give the Moke some maintenance once back.

First up was an oil change, with the oil dropped as soon as the car was the in the garage after the blast back from the ferry. I also used my last genuine Unipart Oil Filter.

One of the task I've been intending to do for a while was swap the oil pressure/electrical temp gauge that I put in as a temporary measure when I was losing water every time I used the car. The electrical gauge had never been very accurate and only ever offered a guide, so a swap to mechanical gauge needed. At the same time I swapped the instrument lighting for LEDs, rerouted a few of the electrical connections through the bulkhead in the correct place and got a rubber grommet on the bulkhead where I the speedo cable/capillary tubes came through.

As I've had an Oil Temperature gauge and a DSN filter head with the adaptor for a temp gauge laying around for my long term Mini Equinox project sat around I also fitted those to fill the 3rd space on the panel. I'm really pleased with how much clearer the LEDs light everything.

Unfortunately a few weeks after all of this work, I noticed some bubbling coolant from the front of the head gasket.... so today apart it came again! While I'm at it this time I've decided to pull the radiator out as well, I've sourced the correct one for the year and just needed to get a re-core done on it. When going through the whole cooling system over the time I've had it, the radiator has never been out, although when flushed through the water runs clear I am wondering if it is partially blocked.

I've signed up for the club stand at Mini in the Park, so that gives me just under 3 weeks to be sorted, should be easy I hope!

Hi Peter,
If you've got the rad out check the water pump, good idea to put a new one on as they are reasonably cheap.
See you at MITP.

Yes water pump is off too, I've replaced it previously and it still looks good. I'm planning to get the pressure washer out and give the block a bit of a blast through. Although the coolant tends to stay clear of muck now, I think there is some sludge around cylinder 4 still.

Small progress today, I'm waiting for the radiator to come back from a re-core so haven't started reassembly. It should be back on Monday so gives me 5 days to be ready for MITP.

I've flushed the block through with the pressure washer, and given the engine bay a clean where the radiator overflow had left rusty stains from its overheating issues.

The speedo has never worked reliably, I suspect the cable so have taken the chance to remove that while access was good. I'll order a slightly longer replacement as I've found it difficult to fit into the speedo previously.

Final bit of work today was to replace the bottom bump stops, as they've missing for quite a while!

My rush to be ready for MITP seems like an eternity ago, I did make it and also the Welsh Weekend after. The Welsh Weekend wasn't all smooth sailing, with a damp related break down on my way, and a poor earth causing starting issues while I was there.

With winter up on us I've quite a few tasks I'd like to get done with the car, ready for next year and some longer trips in it. The following need doing -

Faulty Main Beam - Tracked down to the connections behind the instruments. While looking at this I discovered the car had left hand dive headlamps fitted (never picked up on an MOT, much to my surprise) so these have been replaced with RHD units.
Electric fan - I plan to fit an electric fan between the radiator and inner wing, more for peace of mind than anything else, things did get toasty in Germany last summer. I'm also considering switching the metal fan for a plastic one as I believe they are marginally more efficient.
Fit a heater - I've sourced a Mk1 recirculating type heater, although the matrix requires repair. Again this is more for that bit of extra cooling rather than the heat it will offer me!
Relocate additional gauges/fit 12v socket - Currently my additional gauges live under the instrument cluster, right where the heater will go so these will need relocating and I intend to fit a rev counter and 12v socket at the same time.
Electronic Ignition - I've got a kit, I've just not yet been brave enough to have a go fitting it. The aim is to be more reliable for those longer runs.
Replace windscreen rubber - The trip to Wales in the rain proved that this is past its best, I've also not currently got the rubber between the frame and body so will fit this at the same time.
The final thing will be yet another head change! I've had a period Barewell Motors alloy head for quite a while, with the intention that it would end up on the Moke one day. My Pick-Up required a replacement head as its own is damaged, so this seemed the perfect excuse to swap things over. The only problem now - do I need a nice new inlet and exhaust to go with it?

One point to watch for with the heater. Just make sure the fan motor doesn’t foul the gearstick when selecting first and third

I hope everyone is doing ok currently! Typically just as I got the Moke back together everything stopped!

I've got a number of my winter jobs done, and some not sorted yet. The car is running with the period alloy head now, it probably needs a bit of a tune up, however the 10mph or so I can get up to in the yard seems ok and it is idling cold much better than it used too. The electric fan is wired in and working, again the temperature this kicks in at needs adjusting but that can be done when i actually get to using it. My plan to fit a heater hasn't happened yet, however a lot the basic preparation is done. The bottom is changed and the head has the heater take off fitted and the correct blanking plate is now in the bulkhead for the pipes to run through. Currently I've just looped a pipe from the heater take off to bottom hose around the front of the engine bay. I'm currently in the process of fitting hazard lights to the car, just waiting for a bit of wiring to arrive to finish that off.

And I have a dead Moke....

Tried to start it to have a crack at getting the mixture somewhere in the right ball park for it to actually be drive able and I get all my lights on first position, but nothing when turned to crank it over. I guess the switch has died and as I have a spare I'll give that a try, just need to finish putting together the troublesome Scimitar back together and I'll turn my attentions to that.

Ignition switch replaced, we have a working Moke again. Scimitar still not totally together and in the way though, so not had chance to try and set mixture yet.

and we are running better! Reset the carb to 2 1/2 turns out and re-gaped points and it now starts and revs cleanly, I've had a run around the yard and was happy enough that I've booked it an MOT on Monday.

Fingers crossed it goes better than the Scimitars did yesterday, it passed and them promptly died in just outside of the MOT bay blocking the yard.
