Sunraysia Wheel Nuts

Post by grantourer »

Hi Guys and Girls. Can one of our Aussie Bretheren or Sisteren help me? I need 16 Wheel nuts for my Moke's Sunraysias. I have tried emailing Minikingdom and others to no avail.

Don't hold your breath waiting for MiniKingdom On-line.

Are these original Sunraisers or aftermarket copies?

The originals use an odd-ball taper on the nuts 62.5 degrees (not 60 as is the common held belief).

Some of the aftermarket ones were the same and some were 60 degrees.

One tell-tale if they are aftermarket is you can clearly see the weld in the joint on the band, though this will only point to them being definitely aftermarket. If the weld has been ground back and not clearly visible, they could be either. The other way is if the tyres are removed, the originals will have the makers name stamped in to the tyre side of the band.

There are currently chrome plated steel nuts available, which IMO are rubbish (and have the wrong taper  ) and there's also Stainless ones which I'm still checking over, but do actually have the correct 62.5 degree taper!

Hi Spider. Thanks for the info. I will be in our local tyre shop on Thursday. I will get them to whip the tyre off one of my rims, and I will have a look. The Stainless Steel wheel nuts sound interesting, what do they cost?

Giday GT,

Apologies for the extended delay here, I've been a little pre-occupied ;)

I have some photos I took a few days back of both an original ROH Brand Sunraisier, as supplied and fitted to the Aust made Mokes and also one of the Chinese made copies. I'll try to remember to get those up in the next day or so. The ROH Brand Name is stamped in to the Band of the wheel, but will only be able to bee seen once the tyre is removed.

I've had my hands on a few of these nuts lately and they certainly feel the goods. I'll have a few in the workshop later in the week, so I'll check the angle of the taper on them and come back.
