In that vein I made an interesting discovery today. The laygear shaft has a retaining piece to stop it falling out, I discovered this after spending 10 minutes bashing the end of it in an attempt to fit a central oil pickup pipe. Once I removed the locking piece the shaft came out VERY easily (in two pieces!)
On the other hand all is OK - it's my sons gearbox we were working on
