Only six

Post by Doug G »

This is a relatively young/small forum with only 6 having above 500 posts.

What can be done to encourage posters?

Nope that 'could' be construed as post racing.

Anyway I have to head off to a little party hosted by one of the Banks here.

So I shall enjoy a few drinks with interest (pun intended).

PS A first for here as well "Valet parking' will be provided.

How many guests have they invited????

Perhaps the group of forum knockers should subscribe to this forum instead, http://www.grumpieroldmen.co.uk/forum/phpBB3/index.php The reason anyone would have to plough through endless postings is simply because they don't log on regularly! Regular checking is the best way to keep control of things, after all you wouldn't expect to be able to leave your garden unattended for six months and not find a weed or two when you came back to it would you?
As to the lighter side of things, I think you will find that those who you would label the main culprits are the first to offer help and/or advice to anyone whether they are a new poster or an established member, indeed any " newbie" posting a "Hello " post will be warmly greeted by the laughing hyena types .

I'm a regular poster over at another Mini related message bored. (MiniMania) It's completely unstructured, no separated topics and is pretty much free-form.
Coming from that environment, I don't see anything wrong with engaging in some friendly banter and kidding around once a question has been answered.
Apologies to anyone offended by that.

I can't speak for the others but I don't post because I don't generally read the Forum any longer (this rare foray is the result of a conversation last weekend that prompted me to look up this thread).

Why don't I read the Forum? - because I'm fed up with wasting time logging on and ploughing through pages of unread posts only to find a load of old rubbish, often totally unconnected with the heading of the section or the topic. There were (are?) several reasonable threads concerning English Mokes which might be interesting enough to keep me involved if I had one, but these, like almost every thread in every section soon get taken over and swamped in 'post racing dross'.

The simple answers to the question 'What can be done to encourage posters?' in my opinion are:
1) The 'management' should remove the post counters.
2) The 'users' should keep threads on topic.

If or when this happens I shall return to reading the Forum on a regular basis and be prepared to post when I have something relevant to say.

PJ
Sorry to discover that you feel that way about the forum PJ.

What would be your best definition of a 'post counter' for the 'management' to use in deciding to remove them?

I agree that all 'users' should keep threads on topic.
However regardless of the forum, one would always get a little 'thread drift'.
In 'Side Scream' I don't think that 'topic drift' is a matter of issue.

If this forum becomes a staid 'stiff collar forum it will surely die.

I will be the first to hold my hand up and admit that Nigel and I have enjoyed a lot of FUN on the forums. lighthearted much of it may be.
Isn't that what is supposed to happen on a forum? . . . Fun ?

FUN isn't that what Mini Moking is all about?

If it became a chore than it is 'adios amigo'.

Are we all to revert to stiff upper lipped chaps, condescending only to comment on a concourse standard Mini Moke or an obscure technical issue?

If so, it is time to say good bye from me.

PS Between Nigel (3,307 or 17.87%) and myself (3,553 19.20%) we have contributed some 6,860 posts. Equivalent of 37.08% of all posts.

Look at the spread since formation some 12.5 years ago [ 18504 posts ] on roughly four posts a day (of which I contributed 1.47 per day and Nigel 1.26 per day, leaving less than 1.33 posts in total per day by everyone else ! ! ! !) :
