Remove & replace an engine
How long should it take a reasonable responsible person to disconnect and remove an engine and then reinstall it?

Take it out, put it back in. Done in a day pretty easily, that's without doing any work on it of course.

Also depends on if you are lifting the engine and gearbox out of the car or dropping it out on the subframe (which is usually quicker).
Mine was out on the subframe and dismantled in less than a day, but all the refurb work has taken six weeks.

Re: Remove & replace an engine
When I had some more practice a standard 998cc engine was out in about 1 hour. But that is for Minis without brake servo.
Without having stress your engine should be out in about 2 or 3 hours (belonging to the experience you or your mechanics have).

Re: Remove & replace an engine
Before I had been quoted a price or said proceed the 'assistant' dropped the engine to facilitate the replacement of the steering rack.
Now that engine is dropped wants to charge me US375.00 for doing it.
I know the the assistant that said the price earns less than US$80.00/DAY!!
This is the gouge and "perceived depth of pocket approach".

Hi Doug. That is what you call, between a Rock and a Hard place or the Devil and the Deep Blue sea. As I see it you have 2 options pay up, and have the work completed or borrow a trailer and load the bits up and do it at home.

Re: Remove & replace an engine
Here's another point to put to them before you pay.... Why remove the engine to change the rack? Pretty much every service manual says "undo the subframe rear mountings and tower bolts, loosen the fronts and drop the back of the front subframe a little. The rack can then be removed and replaced"
Perhaps you should point out that if they don't have the correct literature and/or knowledge they must be a bunch of cowboys and any way ever since you've had a problem with the engine that they should fix at their expense
