Tow Bar

Post by johng »

Does anyone know what it would cost to fit a tow bar to a Portuguese moke with electric socket ? I think my 998 might struggle to pull a small trailer

My father has a tow bar on his 998cc Portuguese Moke and it tows his trailer with his garden cultivator and other garden bits in without any problems. It is a proper tow bar kit that was fitted when we bought the car. I would try M-parts and Runmoke or a few of the tow bar companies in the UK as one of them must have made them.

Thanks for replies. Is the rear bumper strong enough to mount a tow hitch ? Or should it connect to the sub frame

Had a quick look at the macau's rear bumper this aft and compared to the Aussie and African ones it looks like tinplate with minimal fixings so I'd have to say no

The tow bar that Duncan Hamilton used to sell for the Portuguese Mokes, bolted to the underside of the rear floor with about 4-6 bolts. I think it ran the whole length of the floor to give it strength. Former member Ken James also made them to a very similar design.

No,the Aussie bar only attaches to the back end of the floor, the Portuguese bar ran all the way to the heelboard. It's been some years since I saw one so I'm not totally sure what it looked like. A lot of people were fitting them back then so someone must have one out there?

Thanks Dean. I will tell the Tow Bar Company it needs to be fixed along the whole length of the shell

Hi

I have a tow bar suitable for a Portuguese Moke (Watling PB16A). It cost £135 and has never been fitted = brand new. c/w electrics. I sold trailer before my Moke rebuild.

I live in Dorset - accept £50 - I have other surplus Moke bits as well.

Please e mail if interested : r.crumbleholme@gmail/com

In Roy's excellent Moke restoration book he has a plan for a Moke towbar, it bolts to the underside of the boot floor and into the back of the heel board. If you showed the picture to your local fabrication shop I'm sure they would knock you one up John.
Regards Mark.
