It is good that Opie Oils wishes to share this information with everyone, however I as a club member would like to know how Opie Oils ensure that the discount offered to members is now only given to members.

If it is given to everybody then it is not a discount and as Opie have never tried to confirm that a person is or is not a member then it seems that they don't actually give a club discount.

Interesting question, I wouldnt know who all your members are.

They need to register on my site, put themselves down as the mikimoke club, they then have to enter their minimoke club member ship number if they have one... Then they will get discount. 10% below retail.

Is that sort of info your after?

Do you have many users that arent members?

Cheers

The forum is an open environment and therefore anyone, including yourself, can join it. However, being a member of the Mini Moke Club is completely seperate. All paid up members are issued with a membership card which has their membership number. There are many ways to ensure that only members of the Mini Moke Club get the privildge of this discount, if you wish you can message me and we can discuss this.

Thank you

All I would need is a list of member numbers so I can check them against who tries to register for moke discount.

Thank you for that invitation.

What viscosity (i.e. 10w-40w etc) do you recommend for a 998cc 'A' series Mini Moke engine of circa 1973 manufacture with no modifications, being driven year round in a hot climate eg 88ºF ?

9 to 5... Monday to Friday... I wish :)

Whats important really is you use a mineral based oil due to the sheared gearbox/engine sump, anything from 10w-40 to 15w-50 will be fine with regular changes.

What oil are you currently running in it?

Castrol GTX multigrade (can''t remember which).

Shouldnt the oil be a higher number eg closer to 50 than say 10 'for use in really hot conditions?

Evem on hot weather an SAE40 can be fine, it all depends on the application and oil temps. A semi synthetic SAE40 is good to tun around at 110degc all day long without worrying.

A short lesson on Multigrades:

If you see an expression such as 10W-40, the oil is a multigrade.

This simply means that the oil falls into 2 viscosity grades, in this case 10W & 40.

This is made possible by the inclusion of a polymer, a component which slows down the rate of thinning as the oil warms up and slows down the rate of thickening as the oil cools down.

It was first developed some 50 years ago to avoid the routine of using a thinner oil in winter and a thicker oil in summer.

For a 10w-40 to attain the specification target a 10W ( W = winter) the oil must have a certain maximum viscosity at low temperature. The actual viscosity and the temperature vary with the viscosity grade but in all cases the lower the number, the thinner the oil, e.g. a 5W oil is thinner than a 10W oil at temperatures encountered in UK winter conditions.

This is important because a thinner oil will circulate faster on cold start, affording better engine protection.

For a 10w-40 to attain the other specification target a 40 oil must fall within certain limits at 100 degC. In this case the temperature target does not vary with the viscosity grade, if there is no "W", the measuring temperature is always 100degC. Again the lower the number the thinner the oil, a 30 oil is thinner than a 40 oil at 100 degC., which is typical of maximum bulk oil temperatures in an operating engine.

The engine makers are, of course, very well aware of this and specify oils according to engine design features, oil pump capacities, manufacturing tolerances, ambient temperature conditions etc. It is important to follow these guidelines, they are important and are an are stipulated for good reasons.

If the engine has been modified, the operating conditions may well be outside the original design envelope. The stress on the oil caused by increased maximum revs, power output and temperature may indicate that oil of a different type and viscosity grade would be beneficial.

Cheers

So if I use a multiugrade eg 10W - 40W ,the 10w would ensure that the metal gets covered at start-up minimising wear etc and then the 40 kicks in when the whole engine is hot?
