Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
Hi,
Just done an oil change on my 848cc 1965 mini moke using Miller Oils Classic 20w50 product code 5119, but I now see that there is another Miller Oil specifically for classic minis where the engine and gearbox share the same oil.
What difference would the mini specific oil be over the one I've used? Would it justify the extra cost?
Cheers
Chris

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
Hi Chris
As far as I am aware, the Classic Mini oil is basically a motorbike oil. Normal car oils are designed to protect the engine, but with the A-series and bikes, the oil is shared between the gearbox and engine, so you want something that will protect the gears as well. A normal car oil is okay to use, but I tend to recommend either one of the Millers mini specific oils or a motorbike oil, depending on the use it's getting. I don't see the oil you are using causing any problems, but it might be worth considering the Classic mini oil next time.
Cheers
Tim

That seems to suggest that you think you'll have driven 3000 miles by next year

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
Would that be 3000 or 6000 miles Nigel?
This oil change was 2 years from the previous one and about 3500 miles. The oil that came out was the Miller Classic Car oil and it looked pretty black. The oil pressure seems higher with the new oil so I will proberbly change it every year now, its cheaper that a gearbox.

Oil changes should be every 3000 miles......that's what it says in the service book ( mind you, oil was affordable back then)

My Leyland book says oil change at 6000 miles or 6 months, so mine will be approx. 2000 miles and 12 months!

Your book says "Leyland". But your Moke says " BMC"

Since I have a subtle(?) oil leak, I think I replace mine more often than that.

Ah, the good old total loss lubrication system don't forget you still need a new filter every so often

What is your opinion of ZDDP additives in an A series?

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
If you are using the correct choice of oil then no need to worry about ZDDP or any additives for it.
ZDDP is one of those things that is quite miss understood. In oil, zinc is a component of an anti-wear/antioxidant compound, ZDDP, zinc dialkyl di-thio phosphate. It works because of the phosphate component (containing phosphorus) and the ‘thio’ (sulphur) component. The zinc has no effect on the engine; it just holds the ZDDP molecule together!
In a decent classic oil you will get around 1200ppm ZDDP, this is plenty for an A series and anything else for that matter, the oils with the most ZDDP are modern racing ester synthetics, these can carry up to 1400/1500ppm. No point trying to add any more, it wont have any effect.
Cheers

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
Despite being a Morris Oil aficionado for 40+ years, I've just changed to the Millers Mini specific oil for the Moke as it seems to be the only multigrade that also has GL4 spec for the gearbox.
