Cylinder head swap

Post by Wally2 »

Hi, i've been looking at getting the 848cc cylinder head refurbished/converted to unleaded, have been quoted £225 locally to include skimming, new valve guides, new valves and springs. Inquired at Mini Spares, they do a replacement for a 998cc which they say will fit the 848 (must admit they look pretty much the same), however, as mine is an 848 without the temp gauge tapping below the stat housing they wont take my old one in exchange. This means I'd have to pay the surcharge as well as the cost of the refurb head, all told cost would be £350.
Does anyone know if the only difference between the 848 and 998 head is the temp gauge tapping?
Cheers
Chris

I think they are the same bar the temp sender fitting like you say.
What about this.

Managed to get the cylinder head on e-bay and so will look to swap it over the winter, with the copper gasket! Cheaper than getting mine machined, just hope it fits ok.

Hi all,
Just received the 'new' cylinder head from e-bay. it has a tapping just below the stat housing for the temp gauge sensor, it looks like a tapper thread which my Tim capiliary gauge sensor adaptor wont fit. Anybody know what thread it is?

What was wrong with the heater valve blanking plate location? How many miles a year do you expect to do with your Moke? The original 848 in a Moke was designed to run on Ess Aitch One Tee fuel... unless you're doing 10K plus miles a year, cheapo unleaded plus a little squirt of Redex valve lubricant will go a long away......

Not having my Mk1 fitted with a sensible water temp sensor tapping  Actually, my TIM capillary water temp gauge has failed after 5 months...going to rpelace the oil pressure and coolant temperature gauge with a dual Smiths MGB type capillary gayge....

Hi Janz, I hear what you say, but my original cylinder head needs work (skimming and the valves re grinding) and the gasket has a slight water leak so needs replacing anyway, so I bid on the head on e-bay not really thinking I'd get it but as sods laws says!! So if the original head has to come off I may as well put the recon one on with a decent copper gasket and I'II have the 'proper' temp gauge tapping, which hopefully will give a better reading as the sensor will be fully submerged (not submarines again!).
There my excuses and I'm sticking to them!!

Fair play to you Chris... I'd probably do the same in all honesty. TIM have said they'll replace my failed gauge FOC :D Let us know if the thermostat body placement gives any better readings?

Cheers,

Jan

hi Janz, Will do, although it will be over winter when I change it over, I'm also thinking that i'II change all the studs, nuts and washers, Mini spares do a complete kit for the head studs and another for all the ancilliaries at a reasonable price. I noticed when I replaced the gasket the last time that some of the studs were looking worse for wear.

Re: Cylinder head swap

Post by Wally2 »

Hi all,
Going to do the cylinder head swap in the next couple of weeks, got all the bits including a shinny copper head gasket. The manual says not to put any jointing compound or grease on the joint, which is what I did last time and ended up with a water leak on refilling the radiator. The leak sealed after running the engine up to temperature but after a couple of hundred miles has returned.
So have any of you used any jointing compound or grease when replacing the cylinder head gasket? If so can you recommend any particular type? Or should I do as the manual says and leave it dry?
Cheers

Hi Chris. I have never used jounting compound on a head gasket. Main thing is to make sure the head is flat. I have always had my heads skimmed when replacing head gaskets.

Hi Graham,
Thanks for that, I think that the copper gasket I'm going to fit is a better one than I used last time, also the replacement head has already been skimmed, just hope the block is flat!

PS no sign of the rivets yet!
