Twin Carbs

Post by liirge »

Hey guys,

I have an engine that has just been removed from my mini moke, it had a minispares alloy inlet installed and an HS4 waxstat carburettor. Anyway it looks like it's been whacking against the bulk head, which is a bit odd I thought. (English moke)

I have to questions in respect to the above observation:

1. Is the bulkhead closer to the engine than in the mini?

2. Has anyone successfully installed twin HS4's in their mini moke, if so what type of filtration system fitted into the confines?

I think 'twin carbs' might be more trouble than they are worth.

I did have twin 1 1/4" SU s on my moke at one time and using the standard filter housing I had no problems with bulkhead clearance

Did they provide better performance ?

Were they harder to tune/balance?

Why did you get rid of them?

Swapped 'em for an 1 3/4" Hif cos they were knackered. As to day to day running, if you've got a balancer there's not much of a problem but the single 1 3/4 carb works just as well for day to day use

I've had the same experience as Nigel, although I only run a single 1 1/2". For many of us, our carbs are getting a bit tired anyway. If you've got two of them then you have the problem of wear (which might be uneven) in twice as many bits. I think that if you were dedicated, had them properly reconditioned (which is really expensive from an SU specialist) and put the effort into getting them set up and keeping them that way twins would offer a performance advantage, but for average day to day running it isn't worth the extra hassle.

Having said that, I'm planning to fit the 850 in my Traveller with a period Alexander inlet manifold and a pair of 1 1/8" H1 carburettors (off a Mk1 Sprite). I'm hoping for a full-on performance 850 with power comparable to a standard 998! Watch out rice custards everywhere, I'll be ripping your skin off!

That's why I'm going to put them on the Traveller.

I have been following this thread and stayed quiet about it. Yes, I agree Nigel, and I'll also say that when opening a bonnet to be presented with twins does look the goods, especially when topped off with a nice air filter set up (I actually like the neat look of the stock Cooper ones), however if it's road performance and drivability along with a low stress life style one would like, I personally wouldn't recommend twins, especially since there are better alternatives in an SU set up to go for. Yes, I have 3 minis with twins :)

Tim, they would look perfect on your traveller.

Personally I'd go for the split weber setup if I were that much of a poseur (yes, I've got two in the garage)

Webers are so 20th Century Nigel. It has to be injection these days.

Seriously though, there is a bit of a movement towards Mikuni motorbike carbs on Minis. If what this site claims is true they might be well worth a look.

Yer I knew the guy that had these on his mini, it was OK, he reckoned the same as a webber. As a sign of the times he went over to injection and throttle body set up, hasn't looked back.

I had a twin choke carb on a Beach Buggy I had a number of years ago.

The twin-choke did not affect the insurance rating.
