Hi Everyone,
Those who are on the FB group will have seen the fun I've been having with my head over the last couple of weeks.
I've the following issues/symptoms after todays run to Mini in the Park
-Running Hot (no temp gauge fitted currently, but the oil pressure is dropping very low when hot approx 18-20 psi at idle)
-Just over 500ml water lost, no obvious external loss
-Rough running when cold, seems ok once warm but perhaps lacking a bit of power
-Low compression (85,80,80,85 checked when hot)
-High fuel consumption? (less sure on this, but seems higher than I got on IMMM earlier in the year. 1.5 tanks for around 200 miles)
I suspect the head is slightly warped, and its time to pull it apart again, and actually get the head checked over properly this time.
Does anyone have any thoughts before I start to strip it again?
Thanks
Peter

Re the oil pressure. At idle the pressure will drop, often as low as yours does, when the engine is warm. So long as it is up at around 50ish when the engine is running at speed there isn’t a problem
If you’re only getting 18 - 20psi when the engine is revving then that IS a problem
As to the water, mine seems to loose some on long motorway thrashes, even with a header tank...I just top it up and try to remember to drain the system come winter time

Yes pressure builds when revving, just under 50. I'm not sure if I'm just being paranoid with all the issues I've had overheating!

With regards to the head. Take the radiator cap off, get it up to temperature, so that the thermostat is open, and see if any large bubbles appear, if they do, you have a head problem. Usually caused by blown head gasket between cylinders 2 and 3. Will need skimming. Used this trick a couple of times.

Re: Engine Help/Advise required
Spent some time on it again today.
Compression Cold - consistent 90 across all 4. Seems low.
Run up to temperature with cap off and no bubbles.
It could all be in my head, just doesn't seem to be running as well as in Germany.

I just run standard 95 stuff and always have with it.

Re: Engine Help/Advise required
I found that mine runs better on 98, usually Shell V Power or Texaco. I think that next year the UK will change the 95 to 10% ethonol which could be bad news as it corrodes rubber, so if you've got any rubber seals or tubing, it will be a problem. The 98 higher octane should stay below 5% so more reasons to use it. It is a little more expensive but I think it's worth it. Try a tank full see if it helps.
