Engine replacement

Post by Doug G »

If replacing the 998cc engine with a 1275cc is it best to replace the clutch and gearbox as well?

Has anyone done this?

OR Is it recommended to replace the engine with another 998cc engine?

Fit what you can find. A 1275 helps with climbing hills and keeping up with higher speed traffic. I will be fitting a 998 in my moke.

Yeah,1275 is better in some respects. It uses more petrol though and as to the gearbox question, pretty much any size engine will fit on any gearbox.
If you do go for the complete power unit change one thing to be aware of is the final drive gearing, e.g. a 1275 out of a later mini with 12” wheels would have a pretty tall diff in it and when you combine that with high profile tyres on 13” rims you can end up struggling on hills

What is the price of a new one, or even a rebuilt one?

What do you actually get with a new or a rebuilt engine.

What does 'rebuilt' really entail??

Engine replacement

I picked this up the other day. It’s a 1963 1100 engine. I also bought the SU carbs. The Webber carb wasn’t part of the deal.

You can't really get a new one, only a rebuilt one. Price? How long is a piece of string? Places like Mini Spares do off the shelf 'short' motors for around 1000 punds, but you have to send them another one to rebuild or they charge a 750 pound surcharge. A short motor doesn't include the head, gearbox, clutch etc. A full power unit with gearbox, head etc must be at least 2-3000 pounds, bought that way.

The other way to do it is to locate an old engine and have it rebuilt. Your existing gearbox would probably be fine to use, you can pretty much mix and match them, but you'd want to freshen it up too. It would still be expensive, depending on how much of it you can do yourself, but should be a cheaper.

What does it entail? Wll usually they will bore out the cylinders to remove wear. New larger pistons will be fitted. The bearing journals on the crankshaft will be re-ground and new bearings fitted. The camshaft will be re-ground (or replaced) and new bearings fitted. New water pump and either new or re-ground cam followers. That's just the engine. You need to do the head and gearbox too, really.

Mokes don't really lend themselves to transplants from other cars, so dropping in a cheap Japanese engine is not really an option. It can be done, but its not a simple swap.

cheers

You could always take a look at the KAD website if you want a top job engine and a (terrified) smile on your face

Indeed. There's no upper limit to how long the piece of string can be.

If I only had an unlimited budget...
