Mine was painted in black tarry stuff, which made it easy to find the leaks because the petrol dissolved it and left a clean patch.

If you coat the inside with tank liner you may have problems with the fuel intake. Some Moke tanks have a little plastic strainer in the end of the intake that the lining will seal up. I'm told you can poke them out with a bit of wire fed in through the fuel outlet after you apply the coating.
