13" Rear Brakes

Post by grantourer »

Do any of you, on the wonderful continent of Australia, know if the hand brake actuating mechanism is different on the 13" wheel to the 10" wheel, as I am having problems with my hand brake.

I'm sure the basics are the same. What are you having problems with? The metal arms that go through the backplate can wear and make things difficult.
Back in the day a well tried upgrade was to use ones from the 1100/1300 range as they were slightly longer and therefore produced more leverage..... It might be hard to find a pair these days though

Hi Nigel, if you adjust the brakes for optimum position. IE adjust up and then back off, you have an excellent pedal. Then when you attaché the handbrake cables, and they are allegedly Aussie versions, the drum is locked solid. Adjust the brakes to free the hand brake, and then you have a spongy pedal.

Sounds to me like the cables are too short. There was a small batch that showed up over here like that.

Further to Spider's response. The only significant difference between 13" Moke and 10" Moke handbrake mechanisms is the cable, which needs extra length between the 'dowel' that engages in the quadrant and the clevis on the end, to allow for the longer training arms.

Thanks for the replies Guys. I have found a pair on Oz eBay, and they are on their way. Does anyone know the difference in length between the 2 cables.

You ought to be able to work it out. Spider will correct me if I'm wrong, but it should be the distance between the centre of the stub axle and the fixing bolt for the shock absorber. On a litlle wheeler the shock absorber mounts to the back of the stub axle, but on an Aussie with lengthened trailing arms the stub axle is moved rear-wards by a couple of inches however (I think) the bolt for the shock absorber is still located where it would have been on a little wheeler.

I haven't got the dimensions to hand, but I seem to recall that the 13" Cables are actually around the 3" longer than those for the small wheeler.

As Tim has said, the 'added' length is between the crimped nipple on the cable, that fit's in to the Quadrant and the Clevis that hooks on to the lever that goes through the Back Plate.

You'd have to try extraordinary hard to fit little wheeler cables on to a big wheeler!

Thanks Spider. I will compare the UK version of the cables, with the Oz ones on their way. Once the brakes are done. I will get back to my winch project!!!!!!!!
