Tire replacement.

Post by Doug G »

Son was out driving the Mini Moke and picked up a thorn a few yards from home.
Tire deflated.
Spare flat.
Both ‘Made in China’

Tried to repair the tire with the tarred rubber strip etc kit.
The hole cleaner tool all but disappeared into the tire. 😳

Then on trial basis on other parts of the tire it went in really easily all over!!!!! 😱🥺👀

Checked the tire manufacture date.

August 2008.

So only thirteen(13) years old. 😳

So am replacing all five. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The tire is 175 70 R13.

Would a 195 70 R3 although 20mm wider, make that much difference?

Would it affect the steering radius?

It will make the steering heavier.

195 is pretty wide, they tend to get a bit floaty in the wet.

Thanks Tim. :D

'Floaty' when wet is a bit dangerous, although without a canopy I tend to try and avoid driving in the wet.

I also wondered if they would rub on inside of wheel arches etc.

Just bought 5 new ones 175 x 70 x R13 +/-£44.00 each, including fitting.

175s do, so I'd expect the rest to. :D

Really!? There must be something right with your Moke. I though they all rubbed inside the arches on full lock.

That said, when I first re-did my suspension and it was all sitting at the right height they were good, but as the suspension sagged it came back again.

Mine used to but the last time I refurbished it I was a bit flush so I splurged on a new steering rack…..the most expensive one in the catalogue. It’s a sports pack rack, as fitted to the last minis, that have 13” rims fitted, mind you the turning circle is of supertanker proportions now, but no rubbing :D

That would explain it.

I think that the tires on my Mini Moke rub if the wheel is turned hard over.

Perhaps I have subconsciously learnt not to do that.

Yes that would explain it - but its cheating!

The sportspack rack is essentially just a modified standard rack with something to limit how far it can turn lock-to-lock. Designed to reduce the wheels fouling inside the arches, at the expense of turning circle.

cheers

Apart from the rubbing there are other issues.

As stated above aquaplaning can be a danger, as can reduced traction(psi) on road affecting braking, plus larger road drag affecting suspension, tie rods etc.

IIRC it’s pretty much got the same stops as the old Aussie racks had back when they were new. Of course they all wore out and got replaced with standard mini racks, hence all the shiny inner wings these days.

Were the steering racks in the Aussie Mini Mokes were changed/upgraded from the 'English' mokes when manufactured.

Australian racks were locally made. I understand that they were essentially a shortened Morris 1100 rack and as such are more robust than the UK ones. The Mini and the Moke used the same rack, so it didn't have additional stops. The wheels only rub when the suspension sags, they are OK with new rubber cones.

We don't replace them with inferior UK racks. The Australian racks are rebuildable, so we have them reconditioned and they are good to go again.

And by the way Doug, they’re tyres.
