SU CARB - HIF 44

Post by moking joe »

I am in the process of trying to install an Hif 44 on my 1981 Aus . moke.

With the float chamber to the u/s of the carb. space is tight between the bottom lower edge of the float chamber and the bulkhead. I have the thinner insulator/ spacer and felt that I could shorten the manifold studs by the same reduction, thus allowing the carb over the ends of the studs, but no.

I have established that I could replace one stud with a bolt, thus simplifing the operation, but not sure whether this will enable a successful installation.

Has anyone installed this carb and, would appreciate any advice. The Carb is to be fixed against a Mini Spares alloy inlet manifold, which is fine with the HS4.

Many thanks.

David, I've never fitted an HIF44 (though I have one in a box which I plan to use one day). Is the problem getting it onto the manifold, or the lack of clearance once its there? If there's not quite enough clearance to get it on, you could try temporarily removing the engine steadies and rocking the engine forward a little.

Tim,

Thanks for your reply and, about 2 hours after I placed the posting I managed to install the carb ( following few scratches of the head ), a further 1/2 hr later I was taking it for a test drive.

3 studs were reduced circa 5mm, install all 3 but leave the bottom offside free. This allowed me to slide the carb. over the single lower stud and then over the top 2. By luck ( I assume ) it is possible to pass a 35mm long bolt through the carb body, thus I could now secure the carb. body to the manifold. The nearside lower shortened stud is a little trickey to engage the nut with a spring washer , but it is possible.

Anyway, my further concern was whether or not the bottom edge of the float chamber might move slightly with any engine movement and hit the bulkhead. But so far the gap of circa 7/8 mm seems OK.

I need to set up the timing and mixture properly, but it runs OK, with a noticable difference , considering my rush to 'play Cars ' on xmas eve, according to my good lady.

David, considering that the smaller carbs only use two studs rather than 4, I reckon you'll be fine. Its great that it worked straight out of the box. Tuning SUs especially when the needle may not be perfect for the job, is one area I have to admit that I struggle with. You may need to get a specialist to set it up just right.
