Even more petrol cap questions

Post by Robin Jones »

Well, from out of the blue this evening I got a phone call. It was from a gentleman I had met at a car show two years ago. We had talked about my fuel cap with the missing ear and he "thought" he had one laying around. He said he had hung on to it for so long he couldn't remember if it came off his long gone Moke or a Land Rover.
Well, what do you know? He came across it during a move to warmer climates. And, had hung on to my business card that long. Go figure.
Anyhow, he sent me a couple of pictures with a scale next to it.
First, the outside diameter is around 4.5"
Secondly, the "ears" on the inside looked further out than I remember.
Problem is, my Moke is in hibernation and I can't access her to check....
Would someone be so kind as to measure their fuel cap diameter? And, if it's around 4.5" diameter, snap a photo of the backside so I could compare?
Thanks in advance, Robin
Oh, English Moke top filler cap...

Robin, 4 1/2 inches is about right. Mine measures 113mm OD. Unfortunately I can't find the doover that lets me download photos from the camera, but the underside has four spring clips radiating from a raised portion in the centre. Each clip is about an inch long and finishes about 1/4" from the outer rim.

As mentioned elsewhere the land rover caps look the same from the top but have a couple of different variation when viewed from underneath.

Well, if he doesn't need it why not convince him to let you have it for the cost of postage ? Then if it doesn't fit you can store it for the next 20 years or so before passing it on to some youngster you meet at a future car show ??

It's not much more than the cost of postage... It's just that I already have enough stuff laying around that I can't remember what it goes to.... So, I really don't need to be collecting Landy bits.
Could someone please shoot me a photo of the back of a cap?

Fuel tank filler
Cap and filler are of a 77 Moke but this, I believe, is identical, to an English model
I also have a brand new Land Rover cap somewhere that has different lugs under the cap. I will see if I can find it.

Hmm, Dean must have been out photographing while I was searching for my doover and charging my camera batteries.

No, I'm back from the South Pole now (better fix my profile) thats the pristine freshly laid concrete in my driveway, leading up to my new garage complex!

Thanks for the pictures guys. They seem to match up with the ones this guy sent me. So it's on it's way to me.
Now the only* thing left is the fuel tank sending unit. M-Parts was talking about having a run made. Anybody hear anything on that?
And in true BMC fashion, as soon as I think everything is operational again, something else will break.
