Spax Adjustable Coil Over Conversion Kit

Post by ottmagen1900 »

Hello everybody,

do anyone of you have experience with the Spax Adjustable Coil Over Conversion Kit? (like sold by minisport: http://www.minisport.com/sparsx519-spax ... n-kit.html)
Does the kit also fit an english Moke? Any adaptions etc. neccessary?

Would be kind if anyone can help me.

Regards

Hi Stephan. I've no experience of the coil overs but Spax shock absorbers a pretty good, especially the adjustable ones. Personally I'm happy with the good old rubber suspension fitted to my Mokes (besides its a damn sight cheaper than the kit shown) :D

I haven't tried the Spax Units, however I used to make Coil Overs for Mokes, based on a stock Koni Unit. When starting out on that I did look at the Spax Units and of course they are (or at least at that time) very well made. They also have the advantage of the adjustable base and damping. They will fit, no problem, just be mindful that the top stud is off-set and it is very important that the stud is positioned innermost (hope that makes sense). Sometimes the lower side rail of the subframe needs a little adjusting so the the lower end of the shock / spring base doesn't foul.

The other thing, that will give trouble, is the stud on the lower arm, which is one piece with the stub axle in the little wheelers. These are only 3/8" dia and marginal at best with a normal shock, let along when you start loading it up with a spring as well! You can cut the stud off and Drill / Tap the stub axle for 7/16" UNF and fit a Black Cap Head Bolt, these are Grade 10 Tensile. On the Big Wheel Mokes, this mount is actually on the Arm itself, we drill these 1/2"

If you are retaining your rubber cones as well as fitting these, I'd suggest not using too high a rate spring, something in the 50 - 70 lb/in mark.

Also, keep a bit of an eye on the pressing in the body that's spot welded in. Usually they give no trouble, however I have seen a few punched out after a while. We run a bead of weld around them for some added insurance.

These days, I run Shocks with inbuilt Air Bags.
Old Mokers never die, they just smell that way.
