Years ago when I was young and foolish (32 ) I headed up a team from our canoe club and painted 30 odd racing kyaks with 2 pack Mainly outdoors and with ordinardy paper facemasks - no warnings other than "Avoid inhaling fumes" Recently I thought I'd use the same technique to change the colour of a second hand fibre glass showerbase from grey to white - the boat builder where I bought the stuff recommended a water based 2 pack - brilliant !! but took 7 coats to get a solid colour.Tim wrote:2 pack gives an amazing glossy and very hard wearing finish, but its probably not something for the amateur to be playing with.

darkblue]Did he show/tell you about the 'air blower thing' thats used to dry off the water based paints? ... I had a quick demo of it the other week when I picked the paint up for my Moke (Sticking with base & lacquer) The guy had been away on a weeks course for the new water based paints and still couldn't get his head round spraying paint mixed with water! Re: Australian paint code??
Hi
I have a 1980 Californian Aussie built Moke, in regular use (at least in summer) in Auckland.
I've been struggling to get a match for the blue which I am sure is AM EYE BLUE.
No one here seems to be able to get the formulation from the Leyland name or code. They all claim that "the fancy computer system that has all that info regularly drops off the oldest stuff".
I don't suppose anyone has access to the full specification for that colour, so I could some made?
thanks
Andrew

Re: Australian paint code??
Its not going to help, unless you get the formulation for the particular brand of paint you're using. I would suggest shopping around your local automotive paint suppliers to find someone that has the old books.
I recently needed to get some colour matched paint mixed up. I went to the best automotive specialist here in town and they just pulled a book out from under the counter which had all the codes. They mixed up Silver Birch (as used on all the trim) for me, but I had a look and it had the codes for all of the seventies colours, including AM I Blue. I wish I'd written down which brand of paint it was! They were the second or third place I tried, the smaller places only had what was on the computer and were no use.

I don't know the first thing about paint so this is probably going to be totally useless but click below anyway.

Re: Australian paint code??
If you're wanting paint basically for touch up (ie EXACT match), none of the auto shops here will use the formula in any case, though a few of the less experienced ones may start off from that, but few do. Many have computer matching systems if you've something they can scan (eg, side box cover) although a good many of the shops here do it the old fashioned way - by eye (who woulda thought!).
If it's not an exact match you are after (ie TOTAL respray) then pick a colour from another newer car that's close to what you're after, then it'll have an up to date code.
<EDIT: Are you sure it's not Space Blue?
The Code for that is 4800>
<2nd Edit: The only other Blues I have a listing on that was used in 1980 (on Mokes) are Midnight Blue & Blue Royale>
<3rd Edit: There's also a possibility that it maybe an eariler colour Tahiti Blue. AM EYE BLUE doesn't come up in anything I have as a factory colour (not to say it wasn't used by the factory)>

Re: Australian paint code??
Am Eye Blue definitely was used on Mokes, it was used a lot on Minis and P76's and probably the rest of the range too. Its listed as a 73-75 colour, but I couldn't say for sure whether or not it was used in 1980.

Re: Australian paint code??
Yes, but it appears that had finished in 77 or maybe early 78. I have a paint code of 566-15572 for that, but I wouldn't use that. Without tieing a colour name to a year, is risky as the AM EYE BLUE (if) used in 1980 would likely be a different colour (and code & formula) to the AM EYE BLUE that was used earlier.
I know for a fact there was at least 3 different Silver Birches used during production and off hand I think there was also 2 different Hi-ho Silvers. No doubt there were other name double (or triple) ups too.

Re: Australian paint code??
Sorry Spider, yes I see what you were getting at now.
As for the problem of different colour variations, the technique I've been using is to have a pressure pack mixed up first. You can then spray some test cards or some bits of trim and see if the colour suits. People warned me that Silver Birch Metallic was a problem, with several different variations. I could only get the early version made up, but when I sprayed it, it was a perfect match for the stuff already on the Moke. I did the same for the Olde English White on my Mini and found that it was nothing like - so back to the drawing board there.
I wish the previous owner of my Moke had done the same. Its meant to be "Scarlet O'Hara" - red with a bit of orange. Supposedly it was mixed from the book, but its just orange really.

Re: Australian paint code??
Tim, no need for aany apology! I should have explained myself better in the first place!!
Next time you've nothing to do, have a look through some of the colour charts and you'll see an early name dropped a few years, then re-appear a few years later, but it has different codes, formula and is a different shade. It has set me up a few times,,,,,,
Sorry to hear that the lazy PO of your Moke only bothered to cover it in Orange,,,, I must say, I have always admired how nice it looks in your avitar.
<Edit: Here, first two charts I picked up, classic examples;-
Double up - "Damask Red" - if you look on the 64 - 67 chart, second row from the top on the right, you'll see "Damask Red" Code RD5, then have a look at the 68 - 69 chart, 4th row down on the right and what do we have "Damask Red" Code RD29. Clearly, they are different Reds, but same name,,,, traps,,,,>

Re: Australian paint code??
Apart from the odd colour (which I've always suspected was actually matched from a faded patch), it looks OK from a few metres away Up close you can see that the guy that did the blowover painted over weld spatter and the residues of sticky tape and didn't bother to even bog up the rust pitting that the sandblasting exposed. The car was blasted fully built up so there was garnet dust throug absolutely everything. The speedo had a small pink sand dune in the bottom of it! The rest of the rust was just patched over, except on the driver's side where the floor was cut out and replaced with flat steel. Pretty soon, it will all have to be done again, and I'll put it back to proper Scarlet O'Hara.spider wrote:
