Rebuilding and restoration of Barbados made Mini Moke

Post by Mini Mokie »

Hi Guys,

There was a British owned car company in Barbados called Evolution Cars which made the CariMoke. These were fiberglass built Mini Mokes made in the 90ies, the 12th one from the "production line" in 1996 which I am about to purchase.

They had the 998cc engines in them and a few are still on the road running.
The one I am getting has an engine which had overheated, I am thinking of rebuilding if there is no severe damage, if it is really bad, I would like to drop in a 1293 or 1275 engine in it.

There are a few of the classic Mini's around here, but was looking to see if there were engines for sale in the UK. I would have preferred to get an entire car for parts..will have to see about cost to get that here.

Will be looking at the forums here for specs and other info as I tear it down to rebuild.

Looks as though pics have to be hosted and cant be uploaded here.

Cheers.

Check the compression in each cylinder. A low compression could mean a head gasket problem. See my post under Engines'.

Send me the pics by email and I will post them. Check your PM's.

Hi Doug,

I just found a guy locally with a 1275cc engine, I am more leaning to rebuild that and turbo charge it. The engine in the moke presently will still be stripped and checked.
I am almost sure that the cylinders would have been all rusted out with rings, bearings and pistons seized, the moke was parked since 2002 and never ran since then.

I pulled the dipstick, there is no oil in the sump..maybe the previous owner ran it without oil and seized the engine...

My plan is to strip the moke apart and restore from the ground up. I have to check the structural integrity of the body and all the glassed in metal components. I might fabricate and mig weld a bit of reinforcement wherever I could and where practical.

Cheers.

Sounds like a big challenge.

Why not take pics (take a lot you can throw away the ones you don't want) and write an article and send it for possible inclusion in the club magazine 'Moking'.

Been doing that for years :D Will also do the same for this project. I am in the middle of fabricating a turbo manifold for my Land Rover Defender, I will be using a VNT?VNG on this engine.

Cheers and thanks for the reply.

I was once at the Evolution Moke factory in Barbados. They did a nice job, and I always wanted one of their cars. Not many left at this time, so good luck in your project to save and restore one! I can probably find some pictures if you'd be interested.

Best,

1996 it was when I was there at the Evolution factory. I have found 8 negatives, but no prints yet. The Mokes shown are clearly the Jimini variant.
If I do find the prints, I'll post them here.

Fascinating, I've never heard of them before.
