Bavarian Moke

Post by hax_007 »

Hello I'm David and I'm new here in this nice forum. I was reading a lot here before because I always liked the mokes but never get the chance to get one.
I am located in Germany and normally used to drive and maintain classic minis, but a few weeks ago I got the opportunity to buy a moke shell and a small amount of parts.
I will try to collect some more parts and start a restoration/modification this Winter.
But first I have to solve the problem that someone cut out the vin and I got no paperwork with the moke.
Here are some pics of it.
Perhaps somebody can tell me if I am right that the shell is an English Mk1?

If someone is interested to see what I am doing I will update this here.
Thanks
David

Hi David. Welcome to the forum. Where in Bavaria are you? Your Moke looks like a Mk1 from the position of the windscreen wiper mounting holes.

Thank You.
I'm living near Rosenheim its around 60kms South of Munich.
OK than its the right way to watch out for a vin and papers for a MK1.

Hi, nice area to live, we have been to your area several times.

The VIN would have been on a plate, riveted to the radiator surround, unfortunately there was no VIN stamped into the shell, in those days.

Hi,
yes I really enjoy it to live here. :D
There is nothing left of the Vin except the rivet holes, so that's my first step to try get a number and paperwork of a scrapped car :?:
Thanks

Hi David,
That is indeed an early Moke.
There may be a VIN number stamped in the forward part of the seat crossover.
Cheers

I think that's only found on Australian Moke's, if it's an English one the only slight clue you'd have is the body number plate. It should be spot welded to the inner wing above the radiator shroud if I remember correctly

Ironically on British Mokes and Minis the importance of an identification number is inversely proportional to how permanantly it is attached. So for example front end numbers, which don't identify the body after it is manufactured, are welded on. The body number (a bit more useful ) is pop riveted or spot welded on, but the all-important car identification number is attached with little nuts and bolts.

They should have used wing nuts or velcro

Hi David,
welcome to the forum and congratulation to your Moke. I think this is the one from Michael.
There are a few guys around Munich driving Mokes. If you need any contacts please let me know.

Greetings from the Blackforest,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Yes I bought it from Michael.
Thanks for your offer. I think it would be great to get in contact to some guys here.
I only see some mokes once a year at the local Oldtimer Meeting at Maxlrain.

Hi David,

You look like you have a lot of work ahead of you.

A copy of Roy Scott's "A Comprehensive Guide T Restoration" 3rd Edition might be a wise investment and help.

Keep on posting your progress.

Hi David,
Roy's original book is now difficult to get hold of, but he has done a new one called 'Just Restoration' which is based on the original one. You can order a copy directly from Roy, his contact details are in the club magazine.

Unfortunately Roy's address is not in the Miking issue #163 (September).

Does anyone have his email and can PM it to David?

Thanks guys,
the first thing I bought after the Moke shell was the latest version of Roy s Book.
At the moment I am a bit stuck because of my Vin problem.
