Overheating

Post by Nigel(no top)Sykes »

When the moke is started up the temperature gauge will just keep on going up until it’s at the top of the range. It’s got the most basic of 850 engines, no heater so only three hoses in the whole system (all new) It’s got a recored (so new) radiator, a new water pump and yet the gauge still goes straight to hot.
If the rad cap is removed straight after turning it off there is no mass of water ejected but you can hear some “ gurgling” sounds as though there’s an airlock....which seems unlikely as, well where would it airlock?

Any suggestions?

Having just written that a thought struck me....have I replaced the thermostat? The answer is, I don’t remember but I would think I would have. I’ll get a new one this weekend so that can be crossed off the list.

Hi Nigel. Temperature gauge is the only item, in a basic Mini, run from the regulator, on the Speedo, if this goes faulty the temperature gauge does not read properly.

I was dreading that answer as it means I’ll have to do what I didn’t want to do.....buy a capillary type gauge, sigh, more expense

It’s pretty hard to say, it’s a bit like the opening credits of a Stingray episode at the moment What I would say is keep your eye on the website and Facebook page, they are the fastest way we can get the information out

Hi Nigel. Try one of these first, cheaper than a capillary gauge.

But get the right one, positive or negative earth, there is a difference.

Although a new water pump, is it working?

Is there a leak in the system causing an airlock/bubble to form?

Does the level of coolant stay full after the engine cools and after a few days not running?

Is there any water in your engine oil?
Having a moking good time!

Nope, none of the above. Despite Graham’s recommendation I came across a cheap capillary gauge which shows that everything is just as it should be. In fact you can even tell the exact moment the thermostat opens....I guess the old old stock gauge from upstairs was past its best after all
