Front subframe studs

Post by Gordycol1 »

Hi there, I have a 1965 Moke and the front subframe has two tower studs with nuts each side NOT bolts as my previous one. I have sourced a genuine 1965 front subframe to replace it but the top of one of these studs is damaged, can anyone shed light on this please?
Can/will the studs 'screw' out as normal studs and be replaced or are they welded?
Are they available?
and lastly will the later subframe 'twin bolts' fit the same threads?
Thank you all

I’ve a feeling that the studs are probably a bodge from some time earlier in its life. They should be bolts.

It’s the replacement subframe that has damaged studs on the tower. The original one (still on my Moke) also has studs with nuts on the tower fixings? Apparently some early Mokes (and Minis) had studs there before they changed to bolts as they thought at the time, it would be easier to line up the subframe when fitting. I’ll have to try and remove one and go from there I think

The studs were an Aussie thing I think. All of my Aussie Mokes had them and yes, they do unscrew from the subframe. They are still available from suppliers in Oz.

The bolts are available from minispares.

Thanks Dean, my only concern is will they fit the same threads as the what the studs come out of?

Yes they will.
I have a 64 Van and shortly after purchase, I discovered that one of the studs (it had studs) had broken off at the top. At the time I couldn't find any replacement studs for sale so bought the bolts instead. They fitted fine.

Found these links that would suggest the studs were also a UK thing.

Funny, when I needed some a few years back, couldn't find any.

Thank you, I'll check those out. I managed to get them all out easy enough considering they've been in all those years. WD40 around the stud, a few knocks on top with a hammer then backwards and forwards with a trusty pair of Mole Grips sorted it. Its good to know that the bolts will fit tho
