'Chinese' Mokes

Post by Doug G »

I had the honour(? ) several years ago to have a 50% ownership of 12 'chinese' mokes.

I can only speak for the six that I ended up with.

These had three cylinder engines.
they were all manual.
I ended up with six 'Mokes'.
I sold all of these.
So far the last one I sold - with 38 miles on the odometer - suffered a gearbox trouble/failure(?)
A replacement gearbox is around US$1,500 first cost to which one has to add freight and duty.

The others suffered from issues ranging from radio failure(1), UV damage to indicator lights (6) and the canopy especially the 'clear' plastic windows(12), one suffered a problem with the fuel pump (probably due to storage, but was freed up) and another lights and indicators would not work currently resolved. The locks rusted and were difficult to operate (6).
ALL suffered from rust/tin worm especially :
around windscreen,
front wing to slope to mid body junction,
the removable front grille
and at roll bar fixings.
The floor drain holes seemed to be badly placed. There were other issues.

I do not know, but would be interested to find out, if the current 'mokes' are made of better quality metal and if they suffer from similar technical and mechanical issues.

Personal observation : - The seat (driver's) to underside of roll bar was on the short side. My head would hit the roll bar going over small bumps if I did not lean forward.
Having a moking good time!
