How much paint?

Post by Nigel K »

So I have seen differing suggestions on how much paint you need to do a respray on a Moke, between 2 and 4 litres which seems quite a difference (well its double isnt it :-) ). So how much should I get? Does it depend on the type of paint?

I’d go for the 4 litres minimum. Last time I respayed a complete moke I bought 5 litres based on the thought that you can always give it an extra coat, you’ll have some left over for touching up and if you run out part way through there’s the chance of a mismatch in tones.

Right sounds like I need to order 5 litres then :-)

I made the mistake of having it sprayed a lovely creamy bluey/purpley colour last time but a custom one not a standard austin/audi/bmw/mustang blue so matching has been a right pain. Have found a local company who for £15 will do some analysis of the paint on the inside of the battery box cover (because its not been exposed to the elements) and will make a load up for me which is a bit of a result.

Any idea what the sqm for a Moke is? I contacted the paint supplier and they are really surprised that would need that much. They are suggesting 2 litres for 2-3 coats. This is coach enamel and say that you dont need more than 3 coats as its thicker than 2 pack. Apparently 1 litre of coach enamel will cover 10 sqm and 5 litres is what they would recommend for a Land Rover 110 LWB inside and out.

Confused now as to how much to get. Is the big difference in views due to the type of paint? Or am I missing something obvious here? (like including/excluding engine bay, or perhaps the underneath?)

I was using cellulose (or whatever it is these days). Perhaps with the newer type paint and the hvlp sprayers you might well use less

I used cellulose to respray my Moke, all surfaces inside and out, and it is surprising how much paint it takes.
It really all depends on the standard of finish you want but on mine it was six litres of topcoat paint then you have to add about four litres uf primer and thinners to mix.
I don't really think you can work on square area as a guide, it may give a rough idea, but to me its laying the coats on till the finish is achieved.
Cellulose is a "finish out of the gun".
Too much paint is as bad as too little, it really is down to experience, but I think its when you "can look into the colour" its right.
Kind of hard to explain really.
