Loads of things to be replaced
My friend (he is now) came around today.
Removed all the drums. One came off really easily - left front. Others needed some physical encouragement (light tapping etc).
The one that came off really easily was the cause. The pads etc were coated in brake fluid. This has wheel cylinder that needs a repair kit or replacement. I will opt for replacement. $$$$
I need need new pads (all eight of them). $$$$
I need a wheel bearing for left front. Will buy two. $$$ x 2
I need two end rods(?) $$
There was also talk about tie rod replacement along with rack & pinion etc
and and and . . .. . . . ..

Doug, if you need to replace the steering rack be careful, there are literally dozens of permutations of racks and steering arms and its important to get the right combination. I'm pretty certain that the Australian Moke rack is NLA but there must be an alternative that can be used, but I don't know which one.
I've never needed to replace a rack, I just get them reconditioned, which seems to be pretty successful. There is probably someone who can supply the correct Australian rack, either already reconditioned or on an exchange basis.

http://www.dsnclassics.co.uk/ I used them several times while still in the UK and found them to be resonably priced and reliable.
http://www.minispeed.co.uk/classic/ Used them onece or twice with no dramas
http://www.minisport.com/ Been around a long time but haven't used them before.
http://www.minispares.com/ Had a few dramas with them and I believe others still do.
There are dozens of others, you may like to get a copy of Mini World or Mini Magazine from the UK as they advertise all the parts people.
