Cooling

Post by Doug G »

actually an overheating problem.

I have flushed the engine, replaced the radiator, installed new hoses and a new thermostat, also installed a new water pump.

Adjusted the timing (ie no pre-ignition - see seperate post on pinking)

Still the radiator gets bl@@dy hot after 4 miles (not midday).
Suggestions?

How hot? Is it boiling? Do you have a temperature gauge, is it accurate?

Do you have a radiator overflow tank? If so does it have its correct cap, with a blanking cap on the radiator?

Not quite boiling but after only 4 miles it is too hot to touch rad for more than a sec.

No temp guage.

Have a radiator overflow tank. It gacas an ordinary cap.

Rad has a spring loaded rad cap 13lb(I think).

Normal operating temperature is 88°C (about 190°F), that will burn your hand in less than a second. The temperature can go higher than 100°C in hot conditions, quite safely (you don't want it permanently running that hot though).

The radiator should have a flat blanking cap fitted, the overflow should be fitted with a spring loaded radiator cap, but you need the right one, I don't know if its a long or short one.

I'd sort out the radiator caps and drive it, unless its boiling.

I think I will swap them so that the radiator has the flat blanking cap and the overflow shhas the spring loaded radiator cap and see what happens.
