The users online function only shows those who have been active in the last 5 minutes. If you stay logged in, leaving the forum open on your PC, then do nothing, after 5 minutes you will disappear from the online list.
Search engine bots are also counted in the users online total. There can be several of these on at any one time.

Several...sometimes there are more of those on than real forumites.

'scuse me for being thick  - but what's a search engine bot? I can see, from the bottom of the screen, that it's Yahoo at the moment, but what's it all about?

Its how the search engines, like Google and Yahoo get their information, the 'bots are computers running a sort of web browser that roams the internet clicking on every link they can find and cataloging what they see. For some reason the Yahoo ones in particular hunt in packs, often these forums get hit by 30 or 40 bots (which look like users) at once.
