The users online function only shows those who have been active in the last 5 minutes. If you stay logged in, leaving the forum open on your PC, then do nothing, after 5 minutes you will disappear from the online list.
Search engine bots are also counted in the users online total. There can be several of these on at any one time.

Its how the search engines, like Google and Yahoo get their information, the 'bots are computers running a sort of web browser that roams the internet clicking on every link they can find and cataloging what they see. For some reason the Yahoo ones in particular hunt in packs, often these forums get hit by 30 or 40 bots (which look like users) at once.
