While good taps and dies are neccessary during a restoration, I found a thread restoring kit very handy.

They're designed to "roll" the threads back into shape instead of cutting material away. Also, they don't cross thread so easily. (Which can really ruin your whole day) I don't know if similar is available in whatever part of the world you're in though.
