Re: rear brake cylinder size
Well, if your not sure what rear cylinders should be on the rear because they may have been changed for the wrong ones at some point, look first at the Front Brakes;-
Single Leading Shoe - One Cylinder fitted on each side up front - single adjusting screw on the front - then 5/8" at the rear
Twin Leading Shoe - Two Cylinders fitted on each wheel up front - two adjusting screws (ea side) on the front - 3/4" at the rear
7.5" Discs Up front - 5/8" Rear Wheel Cylinder
8.4" Disc Up Front - 11/16" Rear Wheel Cylinder
I prefer to list it this way as often the single leading shoe brakes have been swapped out for twins.
Easy

Old Mokers never die, they just smell that way.

Hi Spider,
Thats a great piece of work!
Mine falls into the 'Twin Leading Shoe - Two Cylinders fitted on each wheel up front - two adjusting screws (ea side) on the front - 3/4" at the rear' which is good because thats what its got now. I've been told by some that the 5/8" cylinders were dificult to get at one time and so 3/4" were fitted instead, but the 5/8" are available again. Any way the present set up seems to work ok so I'II go with that.
Cheers
Chris

Hi,
IF (a big 'if'), with new 7.5" Discs Up front, I leave my rear wheel drums alone and do not upgrade the Rear Wheel Cylinder to the 5/8" what will happen?
Having a moking good time!

Re: rear brake cylinder size
Oops. My error.
I did take heed.
I have purchased the complete MS2682 8.4" brake kit to change from standard drum front brake to 8.4" discs at £448.98.
Still to pick up.

So what happens when I put in 8.4 font disks leave the rear drums the same and not put in 11/16" Rear Wheel Cylinders ?

The Moke explodes in a ball of flame, sinks the island and the ensuing tidal wave floods the entire coastline of America

Or, on the other hand the Moke stops, not as good as a perfect example, but still a lot better than it does now

Re: rear brake cylinder size
Biggest problem you get with mixing brake parts and bore sizes is the possibility of rear wheel locking up before the front wheels do which can cause an out of control situation likely leading to crashes.

Re: rear brake cylinder size
Moke went into a classic mini specialist garage on Monday to have the brakes sorted and for MOT. They fitted new 5/8" cylinders on the back and new 13/16" cylinders on the front which ties in with Somerford Minis chart and Deans advice. Also had new shoes on the rear as the old ones were contaminated with brake fluid, and new drums on the front as one was out of round and the other badly scored. They found that the n/s rear shoes had been fitted back to front and some of the pull off springs were not fitted correctly!
All works fine now and I have a new MOT.
They pointed out that the Moke has spacer drums fitted on the rear - I thought these were standard on English Mokes? Also that the rebound stops are missing from under the front top suspension arms - will have to get some and put them on. They also said that the column bottom bush is worn - I think this is only a felt washer not a solid plasic one as per later Mokes so would give the impression that it was worn?these were just observations by the garage and nothing to do with the MOT.

Re: rear brake cylinder size
Yup, spacer drums are indeed standard. Likely do to the fact the normal mini shell tapers in the back and the moke shell is the same width front to back... having the narrower track from the mini in the back might look a bit oddWally2 wrote:They pointed out that the Moke has spacer drums fitted on the rear - I thought these were standard on English Mokes?

Re: rear brake cylinder size
Hi Chris,
Also with the spacer drums there is clearance between the tyre and the shock absorber and the tyre and the trailing arm, not sure what if any clearance there would be with 'normal' drums!

The standard 145 80/10 tires fit fine with standard drums, however they do look very narrow
