Ignition coil

Post by Doug G »

I am going to replace the ignition coil on my 998cc Mini Moke circa 1973 vintage.

This is the closest one (picture) I can find, would it be OK?

Should I buy 'Lucas' ?

My experience with the later Lucas ones hasn't been good, best I had was 3 months and the worst was 10 minutes!

See if you can get a Bosch branded one, no doubt there are many good brands about, however I have had excellent service from these.

Old Mokers never die, they just smell that way.

The problem with modern Lucas stuff is that its not really Lucas stuff. The quote below is from Holden's website in the UK.
What is a "Lucas" part?
Lucas, as the manufacturing conglomerate it once was, no longer exists. The various sites were sold off or closed down (as in the Birmingham Hampton Street site). Management buy-outs and some specialist factories still exist. At the time of sale of these companies, the parent "Lucas" company entered into long term trade agreements, whereby those factories could continue to manufacture the same items and use the Lucas brand. Our understanding of the current ownership of Lucas is that they make modern braking components and fuel injection systems. There appear to be agreements with some companies to sell modern reproduction items using the Lucas brand and packaging. These items, in our opinion, are sometimes good, sometimes poor.
My experience with the modern lucas stuff is that it generally resembles the original parts in appearance but materials and manufacturing quality are disappointing. My rule of thumb is that if it comes in a green box its new and probably no good, NOS in red stripey boxes is original and will be as good as Lucas stuff ever was.

In the case of headlights (at least), there is also Lucas-TVS. This was a joint venture with the Indian TVS company, they are still in operation. I have a recent Lucas TVS headlight and an old NOS Lucas England one and the only difference I can pick is that one says "Made in England" and one is marked "Foreign Glass".

I use Bosch coils too. I've used the original style and the plastic encapsulated ones. I've had no problems with either.

I have left it too late to order the parts to come out with my son on Saturday.

Will have to soldier on with the parts that I have. :?
