Solenoid

Post by Doug G »

I got a new solenoid for my Mini Moke a couple years ago.

It was installed with the rewiring.

However it died a hour or two after being installed.

So have ordered a new one £8.30 plus FedEx delivery.

In the end it, with Duty etc, will likely cost around £64.40. :o :o :o :o

I know it’s costing you nigh on £65 but if it starts off at £8 including traders markup it means it probably means someone in China got paid 50 pence to make it!
That’s why they fail in short order………..you need a decent scrapyard where you can go and prise a 25 year old one from a junked car, it’ll last a lot longer.

I've heard similar reports from others about the solenoids available now. They look like a proper solenoid, but that's where the similarity ends. I'm using and ancient one on my Moke, out of my parts bin. Its still working nicely and has the advantage of being the old style with the button to press if it fails.

Around here, fitting a starter motor from a Gemini (aka Chevette, I think) is a common fix. The Gemini ones are pre-engaged and have an integrated solenoid. They are a bit more powerful. You'll probably struggle to find a Gemini in St Kitts, but there may be another small GM that used something similar.
