Fan belt tension

Post by Doug G »

At what tension should the fan belt be ideally set?

1/2" movement up/down?

Other?

I generally work on the theory of heaving upwards as hard as possible on the alternator while tightening the (all but impossible to reach) 9/16” bolt underneath. Then fasten the top two

OK but at the end of the operation how tight/slack should there be in the belt?

About 1/2” of deflection in the middle of the long run of the belt. If it squeals when under load then it’s too slack.
