Second gear

Post by Doug G »

Why does the transmission not like second gear on my Mini Moke?

Even with double declutching it is very difficult (grinding noises :o ) to go into gear. Will go int first third and forth no problem.

Once in gear second it will jump put of gear, especially going down hill.

Suggestions/ explanations?
Having a moking good time!

Its typical for them to graunch going into second gear. Its usually caused by the synchromesh wearing out and it goes on second gear first, because it does the most work. Not having quite enough clutch clearance makes it worse too, which is common when everything wears out in the clutch actuation 'system'. Jumping out of gear can be caused by the gear selector fork being worn out inside the gearbox.

The solution is a gearbox rebuild. I think reasonable quality selector forks (or even NOS) are available, but everyone bemoans the quality of the synchro rings that are available now.
