Overheating
I suspect that the bearings in the water pump have 'given up the ghost'.
Well I hope that is what is causing the strange intermittent grinding noise.
Have ordered a new water pump.
Not sure if I should order a new fan belt, as I just put on a new one this month. Best to have a spare?

I hope that the strange intermittent grinding noise is NOT the crankshaft bearing.Doug G wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 13:09 I suspect that the bearings in the water pump have 'given up the ghost'.

Re: Overheating
Which bearing is that?
Crankshaft bearing at end nearest the fan?
Is it an expensive solution?
Or can it be a DIY job ?

Re: Overheating
have spotted some DIY videos on Youtube.
BUT wonder if the operation is as simple on a 998cc A Series engine.

Re: Overheating
Dead simple.
1. Remove engine
2. Strip engine
3. Inspect journals and get crank ground if required
4. Order new bearings.
5. Reassemble & refit.

Re: Overheating
Yes, but if you're doing that then there's a bunch of other things you'll find that need to (or at least should be) done while you're in there. So budget for a full engine recondition and transmission rebuild.

Re: Overheating
It might be OK. A grindng noise is possibly coming from something like the alternator or water pump. If you remove the fanbelt (or loosen it right off, you can run the engine for a short period without the waterpump and alternator and see if the sound goes away. Either of them are much easier to replace than a bearing.

Doug,
Does it make the noise all the time (even when stationary)?

Re: Overheating
I have not experienced it although I am a 'bit' deaf.
Plus I have not driven it for some time - he grabs it before I get the keys.
However my son says it was a low volume, then he hit a speed bump and it is a lot louder now and is a constant. Even when stationary.
He says it is only at the water pump he hears it.
I will wait for him to change the water pump and see it it continues.
Then worry!!!
