What is the difference between these (all priced the same) [Mini Sport online catalogue] bearings :

Main bearings - 998 pre 1984 - STD

Main bearings - 998 pre 1984 - 010

Main bearings - 998 pre 1984 - 020

The difference is. How much has your crankshaft been reground by? Std is, well standard size. 10 is a 10 thou grind and so on

And yes, before you ask, you can only find out by measuring….so you’ll have to strip the engine down before you can order them

And before you even think about taking the Engine out. Find out if the engineering facilities exist in your neck of the Woods

I suspect that it might be much more economic to purchase a reconditioned/new engine fro Mini Sport or similar.

Possibly. Obviously freight will be expensive and slow, and it will need a certain amount of re-assembly when it arrives. Also think about a full rebuild of your gearbox too, because it sounds like it is pretty tired.

I'm amazed to see that Minisport can still supply a brand new 998cc A+ engine. I assume it wouldn't have the correct diff ratio or driveshafts for your Moke, and you'd want at least a 1098cc, but its a steal at £5,000.00 (+VAT for our UK listeners).

Well Tim, buying that I would get it at £5,000(export) :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: , then I pay crating, freight and insurance then 59% (which includes our 17% vat in that) on arrival here.
Then add brokerage fees local transportation etc.
Then installation. :shock: :o :shock: :shock: :shock:

However I could get a 1275cc for £3,103.04

The 998 link is for a 1098 A not A+ engine.

AND. If you’re thinking of the 1275 you need to factor in a new distributor, flywheel, clutch (plate, arm, bearing) and starter motor as it’s an A+

So by then you’re just bout back up to £5k

That's good.

However bearings are comparatively cheap, its the machining of the crank and the entire re-build that make it expensive, so if you have it apart and the crank is not too worn, its possible just to have the journals linished and re-assemble with new bearings, which is almost as good as going the whole way on it, at much less cost.

I'd also recommend the ACL Bearings, make sure you get Lead copper heavy duty bearings as they match the original Glacier & Vandevell bearings. I'd definitely have the crank checked by an engineer, they will check whether the crank will need to be ground or whether just a polish is needed before you swap the bearings. I used https://www.bandaengineering.net to check my 1275cc. I believe King Bearings may do a lead copper bearing for this too. My friend in Bristol had good experience from Bristol Autocare too
