preparing an engine for repainting

Post by Doug G »

What should I clean/prep it with?

Would heat resisting enamel spray paint be appropriate?

If not what?

How many coats?
Having a moking good time!

I usually clean mine with petrol and a wire brush. Kerosene or whatever it called in your part of the world is generally more acceptable but harder to get. I use engine enamel which is slightly more heat resistant than ordinary pressure packs, but engines don't get much hotter than the boiling point of water and pretty much any paint will cope with that. So if you really want to use a colour thats not available in engine enamel go for it.

The number of coats depends on the colour. I used to paint all my engines yellow which usually takes at least 3 coats to cover well. Black covers OK in one coat.

Parafin - we calls it. 3 coats is the ideal, infact the more the merrie, but usually after the first couple of coats with a brush you've had enough :)
