Re: Newbie from Malta - help identify Moke
thanks for your help, starting to put the picture together. luckily it's not standard colour, simply a colour that was available in that era, it could also be from another make.
this weekend I hope to lay out the various mechanical parts, try to identify what's missing or beyond repair to start ordering parts. trying to find a clear pic of the assembled subframes as it's my first mini and the manuals I ordered are still in the post.

Ahh, your first Mini.....I remember it well Better start mutating yourself in the meantime, 6 foot arms , extra long fingers with an extra knuckle plus super thick skin on them. On the bright side at least you didn't choose a saloon (or worse a Riley/Wolseley)

Hi and Welcome, this will be an interesting project and if you followed Chris's rebuild it should give you inspiration.
that rear metal work outlined red and the raised floor look like professional conversions, have you worked out why or what they were for yet? there were obviously some other brackets bolted through the pontoon tops at some point as well.................FF

Re: Newbie from Malta - help identify Moke
The project starts to move!
I trailered the Moke home last week.
Just ordered £1.300 worth of panels which should be here next week.
Malta is a fantastic place. While trying to push the trailer into garage (has to clear a small bump) a neighbour came to help. He's an elderly guy who I don't know as I only moved there recently. Turns out he used to build Mokes (and minis & Alfas) in KCD at the local factory back in the day. He asked if he could help as he'd love a project but is scared to take one himself as he doesn't want to pop his clogs halfway through (optimistic fella).
Unbelievable stroke of luck. He could tell me weld by weld which parts are original and which are not.
August will be downtime as it's too hot to move then September I'm abroad. Hope to kick off after that.

Re: Newbie from Malta - 1967 Moke resto
Finally making a start on this project as the summer heat starts to cool off...
I had several parts sandblasted and I've primed them, now starting with the black paint. I'm using black chassis paint on the heavy parts and black spray where I want a neater finish.
I hope to have the body & various new panels at the panel beater late November/December and then sprayed in January. So I'm hoping to get the mechanicals sorted so that I can start bolting them on as soon as the spray is done.
The fun part of the challenge is that as this is my first Mini I don't know which pieces I'm missing. Trying to build up the parts onto each subframe so I can then compare to manuals, see what's missing and source them.
So far I can already see I need the entire steering assembly, top wishbones (or arms or whatever they're called).
Some pics here:
Can anyone identify this part? does it go on the rear hub assembly?

rear subframe http://minimokeresto.webs.com/apps/phot ... =185443233
Cheers
Steve

Re: Newbie from Malta - 1967 Moke resto
Hi all
Looking through pics of other restorations there seems to be a sleeve under the toeboard, shown in this pic from Pbraun:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pbraun/131 ... 6938170988
Does anyone know (a) what it's for , meaning will I survive without it?
(b) if I do need it, can anyone please send me dimensions as I'd need to replicate it, can't seem to find available from the UK panel sellers
Thanks in advance for any help!
Steve

Re: Newbie from Malta - 1967 Moke resto
If it's that folded thing with a channel in the middle, that's the steering rack mounting.... So yes, you do need it
I'm pretty sure that it's the same as a Mini one (a mini one could be made to fit) and Minis should be slightly more available in scrappers than Mokes are so you could try that.

There are few, if any, things on a Moke shell that are not necessary.
It is, after all, a vehicle distilled down to it's very essence.
Credit for that description goes to Chuck Heleker
